Wat Blue Temple or Rong Suea Ten Temple
When talking about landmarks in Chiang Rai Province, most people probably think of the Baan Dam Museum of Professor Thawan or Wat Rong Khun of Professor Chalermchai. However, recently, a new and striking architecture has emerged: Wat Rong Suea Ten.
Located in Rong Suea Ten Village, Rim Kok Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chiang Rai Province, it is located on the Kok River, on the left bank to the east of Chiang Rai Municipality, not far from Chiang Rai City. In the past, this place used to be the location of an abandoned temple 80-100 years ago.
According to the stories of the elderly, at that time there were not many houses and people living there, so there were many wild animals, especially tigers. Villagers who passed through that area often saw tigers jumping across the canal, so this area was called “Rong Suea Ten”.
The color tones used are blue and sky, contrasting with gold to create a striking feature for the temple. The blue and sky of the temple represents the Dharma of the Lord Buddha that is known throughout the world, which is a teaching that is true and based on reason, like a clear sky. It is a contemporary Buddhist art that reflects the Buddha's teachings.
"The Buddha is the auspicious king, the refuge of the three worlds." It is a principal Buddha image with beautiful features, 6.5 meters high and 5 meters wide at the lap. Inside the Buddha image are 88,000 Phra Rod Lamphun amulets, and many valuables are buried under the Buddha image. The head contains the relics of the Buddha, which were bestowed by Somdej Phra Yanasangwon, Somdej Phra Sangharaj, and there are also murals depicting the life story of the Buddha.
